Dunedin: MetService is New Zealand’s national meteorological service. They provide weather forecasts, warnings and observations for the entire country.

The Dunedin office of MetService is responsible for providing weather forecasts and warnings for the Otago region, which includes Dunedin and the surrounding area. They provide forecasts and warnings for various weather conditions, including rain, wind, snow, and thunderstorms.

They also provide forecast models, radar and satellite imagery, and other weather information to help people plan their activities and stay safe in various weather conditions. The MetService website is a good source of information for current weather conditions and forecasts for the Dunedin area.

History of MetService

The New Zealand Meteorological Service (MetService) was established in 1866, making it one of the oldest weather forecasting organisations in the world. It was originally known as the Colonial Meteorological Office and was part of the New Zealand Government’s Lands and Survey Department. The organization’s main role was to provide weather forecasts to the public and to assist with the shipping industry.

In the early years, the organisation relied on information from ships at sea, as well as telegraph reports from other weather stations around the world, to make their forecasts. In the late 1800s, the organisation began using weather balloons to gather data, which greatly improved the accuracy of their forecasts.

In the 20th century, MetService continued to expand and improve its capabilities. The organisation established a network of weather stations and radar sites throughout New Zealand, and began using computers to process weather data and make forecasts.

In the 21st century, MetService has continued to innovate, using advanced technology and computer models to make more accurate forecasts. The organisation now provides a wide range of weather services to the public, including forecasts for specific regions, severe weather warnings, and information for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing and boating. MetService also provides weather data and services to a variety of other organisations and industries, including aviation, agriculture, and emergency services.
