On October 5th we joined Operations Manager Paula Cross of Otago Peninsula Biodiversity Group (OPBG) for some more trap line checking out at Sandy Mount 🐾

We didn’t find any hedgehogs this time, but plenty of Possum footprints, and at one of the AT220 traps almost half a dozen rats & mice! 🐀🐀🐀🐀

The AT220s are used to target Possums & Ship Rats, but mice often get caught in them too - Not a bad thing as all three of these climbing mammals have been introduced to New Zealand & like to feast on birds’ eggs & chicks 🐭🍽️🪺🐣

They also feed on leaves, flowers & bugs, & so compete with the native animals for food 💀

Conservation groups like OPBG are working hard to eradicate these invasive mammal pests, gradually restoring the ecosystems of the native NZ bush 💪🏻🌱

While we were clearing the tracks for the rangers & volunteers to access the traps, we saw a common butterfly in NZ, a Kahukura (NZ Red Admiral). Its Māori name comes from its vibrant colours, meaning “Red Cloak”. ❤️

The Ongaonga (Tree Nettle) also pictured is the food plant for Kahukura’s caterpillars - pretty amazing given how toxic this nettle is; its sting causes painful burning rashes, loss of movement, paralysis, convulsions, & even neurological damage 😱

We also heard Riroriro (Grey Warblers) calling from the shrubs around us, & Nate even saw a Miromiro (NZ Tomtit) singing from a Harakeke (NZ Flax) - Proof that as the rats, mice & possums disappear from NZ’s landscape, the native birds will return 🐦🎶

"Aoraki to Andromeda

The Andromeda galaxy, at a distance of 2.5 million light years away, above New Zealand's highest mountain Aoraki Mount Cook. With quite a bit of planning and luck, I’m happy to share with you an alignment that as far as I am aware has never been captured before in New Zealand! This image is legit and is not a composite or ‘fake’ - everything was taken at the same time from the same location. It is an exceptionally difficult photo to pull off due to the number of factors including the very low angle of Andromeda from this latitude and the alignment itself, the moon phase, airglow conditions, as well as perfect weather and temperature which is rare for this part of the country. With all things considered, this leaves a very small window each year in which this alignment can be captured, hope you like it!
